The season of red and pink hearts is upon us! Did you ever wonder why the symbol of the heart is linked to romance?
God is sure interested in our hearts! There are over 750 Bible verses that contain the word heart! He instructs us to fix his words in our hearts and minds (Deuteronomy 11:18). He tells us that he searches every heart (1 Chronicles 28:9). He even warns us to guard our hearts in Proverbs 4:23. God has the power to harden our hearts (Exodus 4:21) and to give us a new heart (Ezekiel 36:26). The Psalms promise us that we can pray for God to search our hearts (139:23), create in us a pure heart, (51:10) and give us an undivided heart (86:11). God gives us the great commandment to love him with all of our heart, soul, and strength in Deuteronomy 6:5.
Why do you suppose God is so concerned with our hearts? When our hearts are outside of God’s will, temptation is sure to follow. Guarding our hearts, therefore, is good advice not only for our relationship with God but also our relationship with our spouse.
A heart that is left open to temptation, to feelings of entitlement and resentment can become polluted. Protecting our hearts is a daily activity. No one is immune to temptation. You may be tempted by materialism, busyness, success and achievement, pornography, infidelity, or pride. If we don’t run from temptation, our hearts can become closed and shut off.
This season, as you see the hearts all around you, make a daily decision to guard your heart from whatever may stand between you, God, and a committed marriage. Here are some tips to help you resist temptation:
- pray for God’s strength to resist.
- reflect on the good in your relationship.
- be honest with yourself and your spouse.
- find a small group or an accountability partner.
- read God’s promises and keep a list of them near you.
Keeping a clean heart will help you stay committed and connected to God and your marriage.
