I think this is how many of us approach spiritual training in our home. We feel the weight of our responsibility and we do one of two things: we either over-complicate the situation and give up after a few weeks or we feel that we can never do it “right” so we don’t even try.
Neither of these options honor the heart of the Lord to disciple our children at home!
God is everywhere and His Truth is there for us to discover with our children if we look for opportunities. How about a movie night? Maybe you already have some Veggie Tales or 3,2,1 Penguins video on your shelf. Did you know that in the “extras” section these videos have a family activity that corresponds with the lesson being taught in the story?
If you want some free options, check out cross.tv where you’ll find a wide assortment of Christian and family friendly videos for all ages.
As we start a new year, here’s a simple challenge: would you find one night this month to do spiritual, Biblical training with your kids? If you’ve never tried it before, use a video to get started! Sit and watch the video with your kids (popcorn anyone?), then take 5-10 minutes after to ask a few questions. By all means use the discussion guide or family activity if you are using a video that includes one.
The questions can be as simple as:
- What was the big idea?
- Why is that important?
- How can we work on this in our family this week?
Pray together. And then mark your calendar for next month!
All Scripture is God-breathed
and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness
so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
