Life is BUSY. Schedules are chaotic. Connecting is difficult. Family meetings are worth the intentional planning and meeting time. Why? When everyone is gathered, plans are made and problems get solved. Here are tips for successful family meetings.
11 Tips for a Fabulous Family Meeting
- Family business is important.
All members of the family are required to attend.
- Establish respectful ground rules.
Everyone has an opportunity to speak without being interrupted, no cell phones at the meeting, etc.
- Write it down.
Designate a specific notebook for family meeting notes.
- Rotate responsibilities.
Leader, secretary, hospitality coordinator (treats), and other jobs your family chooses.
- Choose a good time for the meetings.
Coordinate work, sports and activity schedules.
- Be flexible.
A lot can be accomplished in a short amount of time, 15-20 minutes. Longer meeting will be necessary at times.
- Have an agenda.
Post the proposed agenda on the family bulletin board or the refrigerator. Additional items to be discussed can be added as needed.
- Get the children involved in special tasks.
For example, if the family vacation to the Grand Canyon is on the agenda, have the kids do research and present possible activities for the trip.
- Have fun.
Family meeting are not disciplinary discussions unless the problem involves the whole family.
- Mom and dad are in charge.
Parents guide the meeting discussion and outcomes.
Invite the Lord into the discussion with prayer at the beginning and conclusion of the meeting.
