Advent has never been one of the famous Honnold Traditions. I have not been captivated with the liturgy of the season and often do the yawn yawn during advent services at church.
However, this year as I sat to ponder the season I sensed the Father speak to me about it and I promptly tried to move on to other more pressing things in my quiet time. But the idea of Advent kept wafting through my mind until this thought lit up my mind and heart,
Advent is like ADVENTURE!
I am created for a life of adventure and as I thought about how similar the words are, I realized I had missed out on celebrating the adventure of Advent and worse…I had lost a golden opportunity to once again draw my children into the beauty and wonder and mystery of our Lord and Savior.
As parents we have this wonderful honor of being in AWE of the AWESOME GOD and taking our children on the adventure of advent.
Here are 3 things to ponder as you usher your family into the final days of this season.
“Mary TREASURED these things in her heart.” (Luke 2:51).
- Discuss with your kids what the TREASURE was that Mary held in her heart. After all, we love to go on treasure hunts, they are great ADVENTURES.
Advent is as much about the 2nd coming of Jesus as it is the first coming.
- Look at the passage in Revelation that describe Jesus when He returns. (This is especially great if you have boys! They love this fiery description of Jesus.)
- Have your kids draw a picture of who this fascinating God is.
Journey with your family into the wonder of the LIGHT that came into the darkness.
“His breath filled all things with a living, breathing light—
A light that thrives in the depths of darkness, blazes through murky bottoms.
It cannot and will not be quenched” (John 1:4-5 The Voice).
- As you light the tree or the advent candles…make it all dark. Discuss the POWER of a light that cannot be quenched by darkness. Draw your children into the wonder of who the Light of the World is…the city on a hill that cannot be hidden.
As you take your family on this GREAT Adventure of knowing Jesus– it is important that we, as parents, have a longing in our hearts to know this humble baby in a manger who is coming again. It is challenging to take someone on a great adventure if we as the guides don’t want to go there.
So Father of Lights, mysterious beautiful one,
Take me on the great adventure of advent.
Cause my heart to be captivated with the wonder of who you are.
As I go through the motions of the holidays…illuminate my heart with Light of the World.
How you have kept the Adventure of Advent going in your family?
