In regard to my parenting, I was recently weeding and became engrossed in wonder about how many different weeds were growing in my garden. I was struck not just by the number of them, but by the simple fact that I could not identify them. I know a dandelion or clover when I see it, but there were several others that I considered taking to my local greenhouse to beg for help – how do I get rid of them when I don’t even know what they are?!?
And that’s when the Lord whispered to me, “What about the weeds of this culture your children are living in? Do you know what those weeds are?”
Friends, we are cultivating the gardens of our children’s lives. We want them each to grow up to be strong and fruitful… not to get choked out by the weeds growing around them!
We are commanded to live in the world and not of the world (2 Corinthians 1:12). But we must also be shrewd as we deal with the culture (Matthew 10:16). How can we protect our children if we don’t even understand what we need to protect them from?
It’s important to be informed about the dangers to our children and all the while guarding our heart as well so that we see evil for what it is and that we not be deceived into thinking what is false is actually true.
Here is my other observation in the garden: if I didn’t know that weed was actually a weed, I might be fooled by it’s beauty and begin to cultivate it! Do I hear an “Amen?” Satan is a deceiver and we need the Holy Spirit to show us Truth!
I hope this compels you to think about how to protect your children from the weeds that are indeed growing around them. First, let me encourage you to PRAY and search God’s precious Word for discernment. These are our sword and shield so let them also be our spade to work the soil.
