Anyone walking by our house last Thursday morning would have thought I was a crazy person. Clad in polka dot rubber boots and a yellow rain slicker, hood up and tightened, I looked like a 4-year-old. I was talking to myself over the claps of thunder as I bailed a window well with five gallon buckets. The water was almost to the windowsill.
This has been quite a spring for my family, seemingly one thing after another. The impending flood on it’s own would not be a big deal but added to the rest, it was the last straw. I bailed and cried…not just about the water, but all the recent struggles.
In church on Sunday, the congregation sang Oceans by Hillsong. The lyrics remind us to keep our eyes above the rough waters. Our souls need to “rest in God’s embrace”. It’s so easy to dip down, below the waves, and feel like we are drowning. When I’m in deep water, need to be reminded to call out to the Lord.
Tips for Leaning into God During Turbulent Times
1. Choose hope. It is a choice.
2. Pick a Bible verse to cling to during this difficult time. (Use Bible Gateway or a concordance to find a verse for a specific keyword or topic.)
3. Focus on God’s blessings (provision), God’s attributes (character), and God’s promises (power/protection).
Sometimes life is hard. Sometimes parenting is hard. But we as children of the Most High, have faith, hope, and love to lean into when the waves crash around us. He has given us the gift of the Holy Spirit to pray for us when we cannot find the words (Romans 8:26) and the power of God, who raised the dead (Romans 8:11 and Ephesians 1:18-21). And we can lead our children to do the same. Tough times come for all of us, no matter what age or stage of life. Knowing we can do all things through Him who strengthens us is hope-filled in the midst of life’s thunderstorms.
I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
