Where are you today? What is your job or role? Like me are you juggling career, being a wife, a mother? Are you just trying to make it through the day with little ones clinging to you or teenagers ignoring you? Life is full of different stages. Each stage comes with its own set of challenges and benefits.
In 1995, Peter and I were newlyweds from Minnesota living in L.A. I was afraid of earthquakes and drive by shootings. I figured we were there for four years while Peter finished his degree and then we were out of there! My life was back in Minnesota so my plan was just to get through these four years and then begin living when we got back.
Fortunately, our first Sunday in L.A., I heard a message that changed my life, “Lean Into It!” God instructed his people to lean into life right where they were living. They were to build houses, plant crops, get married, and have families (Jeremiah 29:5-6) For me this meant, leaning into this stage of graduate school. I was to lean into my church, my community, make friends, and be in relationships. My life wasn’t going to begin in four years when we could move “home.” This was my life!
So where are you today? How can you lean into it? Where can you serve others, be part of a community, embrace this stage of life? Your life doesn’t begin when this current stage ends. This is your life. Wherever you are, whatever your role, “Lean Into It”! I promise, it will make all the difference.
Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease.
