Our family likes to take summer trips together. Once in a while we go on some extra special trips like visiting Disney World in Florida. But no matter where we head on our family vacation, we give each of our children their own spending money. It’s a great opportunity for the kids to learn the challenge of having unlimited wants and desires but having limited funds.
Instead of just handing my son and daughter the cash, I allow them to earn as much as they want by doing a Bible study with me.
One of the best studies we have used is Kay Arthur’s Bible Studies for Kids series. This involves underlining key words, drawing pictures, etc. Very interactive for the child.
And…yes. You heard me right. I pay my kids to read the Bible! The Weaver Reading Rate is four-dollars per hour. I pay them in increments of one-dollar, every 15 minutes.
Hey, don’t judge me. Before you scoff at my approach, think about it! One year, my son earned forty dollars in spending money for the trip. That meant he spent ten hours in one-on-one Bible study with me! Hard to argue with those results!
This technique has morphed into an ongoing way for my children to earn spending money throughout, not only the summer but the school year as well.
That is what I call…. PRICELESS.
How sweet are your words to my taste.
