Taking a Bible story and reenacting it is the BEST way to make the account come alive! Here is a great activity from Family Time Training to reinforce the story of Christ’s birth throughout the Christmas season. This blog is meant to be shared with your kids! Enjoy!
Read aloud: Read the story of Jesus’s birth from the Bible found in Luke 2 and Matthew 2. (The Rhyme Bible is excellent for younger children.)
Discuss: Talk about the different characters and where they came from to see baby Jesus.
Activity: Have the children pick different rooms in the house (or areas in a room) to represent the different character locations: (Nazareth, Bethlehem, the fields, the Far East, heaven). Make signs to place over the doorways to identify the different locations.
Place the characters from your Nativity scene in the appropriate rooms or you may choose to be “A Living Nativity” and act it out:
Mary and Joseph in Nazareth
Shepherds in the fields
Magi (the kings in your nativity set) in the Far East
Angels in heaven
Stable, manger, and sheep in Bethlehem
Start a few weeks or days before Christmas and move the characters around the house. As it gets closer to Christmas, have the characters move closer to Bethlehem.
1. Mary and Joseph arrive the day before Christmas.
2. Baby Jesus is in the manger on Christmas morning.
3. The Shepherds arrive the day after Christmas.
4. The Magi arrive much later.
An option could be to save a gift from Christmas that the kids can open on New Year’s Day to represent the later arrival of the Magi bearing gits for Jesus.
Have an blessed Christmas. Take time during this season to enjoy the Christmas story!
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,
that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
