Is it just me, or did the summer of 2016 fly by? truths
I cannot believe it is time to go shopping for clothes and school supplies. I’m rushing around with my kids trying to get in appointments for sports physicals, dentist check-ups and more. School will begin whether we are ready or not.
As we prepare for the school year, let me ask you a question: what fears, anxieties, or doubts do your children face as they return to school?
We as parents might also have some fears, anxieties and doubts too. I would like to encourage us to respond with three truths that will help our kids in the school year ahead.
Let’s remind them what God says about them:
- They are a masterpiece. In Psalm 139: 14 it says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made” Even though kids may call them names or make fun of them, the God who is all powerful and Creator says they are wonderful. They are His masterpiece because He has created them in His image. This reminder is needed on a regular basis to fight what others and the world says about us.
- They are loved. Listen to 1 John 3:1. How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! No matter what happens this school year, our kids need to know they are loved by God and us. When they flunk the test, miss the touchdown pass, get ignored at the dance, do not get cast in the play, have friend problems, or get a detention, we tell them with our words and actions that they are loved. Notice this love is not just enough, but it is lavished on us by God. May we love our kids from the overflow of the love that God has for us.
- They are never alone. I have two kids in high school, one in middle school, and one in elementary school. I remember that my middle school years and early years in high school were tough. There is peer pressure to act, talk, and look a specific way. When your child stands out, they can feel very alone. Listen to Jesus’ words from Matthew 28:20, “And surely I am with always, to the very end of the age.” It is comforting to know that no matter what happens this year, they have Jesus with them. He is Immanuel-God with us.
I pray that the 2016-2017 school year will be a great one for your family. And remember that you too, as a parent are a masterpiece, loved and never alone.
