January 2013…a new year, a new beginning. A clean slate. Don’t you love how God provides opportunities for us to start fresh? Each day is new with a beautiful sunrise. Each year is new with a larger number…and a clean calendar!
My family’s 2013 calendar has been hanging on the wall for a couple months, neatly tucked behind the somewhat beat up 2012 version. (Yes, I realize it’s an antiquated system but all four of us are visual learners so the massive color-coded calendar on the wall works!) When I turn the crisp pages of the new calendar, see the uncluttered numbered boxes, I feel a sense of excitement. How will this year be different than the last? Where does God want my family this year? How will we serve? Where can we go? Who will we spend time with; working, playing, and praying? So many questions!
The only One with the answers is God. We serve a gracious Lord. He guides our steps and illuminates our path. Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path (Psalm 119:105). Through the Word of God, the Bible, prayer, and dependence on the Holy Spirit we can find our way.
Will we get lost? Probably. Will we make mistakes? Most definitely. Will we be afraid? Yes. But we can never stray too far from our Heavenly Father, sin so badly we cannot be forgiven, or ever have to go through life alone. The Lord promises in Deuteronomy 31:6, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified… for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Our job is to trust and obey. Trust God with our spouse, children, job, friends, finances, and every other aspect of life. And obey God’s Word. The Bible lays out the Lord’s expectations for us. Obedience is our response to God’s great love.
This includes the calendar. When filling in all those blank boxes, how will the choices we make as a family reflect our faith in Jesus Christ? As in everything we do, it’s all about choices. Will we trust and obey?
A new year, a new beginning, and a new calendar to chronicle our decisions.
How will your family’s calendar reflect your faith?
