Life is so busy with kids, jobs, and church commitments, sometimes it’s hard to find time to connect as a couple. When my husband, Peter, and I do connect with each other, it can sometimes be challenging to bring up meaningful conversations about faith and God. What if he doesn’t agree with me? What if he thinks I’m pressuring him? He has shared that at times he can feel intimidated or inadequate when it comes to spiritual conversations. While coaching and speaking across the nation, I often hear the desire of husbands and wives to connect with their spouse, to have meaningful conversations and discuss important topics like faith.
Years ago our friends, David and Claudia Arp, discovered the importance for couples to be intentional about having fun in marriage. In the 1980’s, it was a new concept to “date” in your marriage. However, the Arps could see that one of the most important ingredients in a healthy marriage is a couple’s friendship. After all, have you ever met a couple that was having fun in their marriage on the way to the divorce court? 10 Great Dates is a perfect way to start a new dating habit, build your relationship, and have some fun!
In addition to couples needing to have to have fun, I hear couples wanting to have more meaningful conversations. So often faith is experienced on an individual level. We may attend church together, pray for meals and our kids but really don’t know how to begin bringing faith into the marriage in a significant way. It’s intimidating to talk about something so intimate and personal, especially if feelings of inadequacy or judgment have been there in the past.
When asked to write this book, I was excited to guide couples through meaningful conversations in the setting of fun dates. All four authors (Peter Larson, David Arp, Claudia Arp, and myself) desired to create a resource that would take couples where they are in their spiritual journey and encourage couples to show grace and acceptance as they learn to connect their faith in their marriage.
Early on, our friends, Paul and Barb Kronlokken, had the idea to use the book to lead a small group of couples. Here is a note from their experience:
“10 Great Dates: Connecting Faith, Love and Marriage was great for couples of all ages and stages, from newly married to 25 years of marriage. Each week, the couples went on a date, talked over the material in the book, and then met in our small group and discussed what they learned. The conversations were rich, fun and honest. It was an enjoyable, encouraging time together and it held the couples accountable to complete their dates and spend necessary time together. Overall, couples experienced spiritual growth, improved communication, connectivity and intimacy. There was joy in what they learned and applied to their lives. I would highly recommend this book as a small group study.” Barb Kronlokken
